"Why we have misunderstood Aristotle's concept of the Tragic"

Chapter 13 and chapter 14 of the Poetics have been seen as disjoint: the former mentions hamartia and seems to endorse “unhappy endings,” whereas the latter sets at the top of Aristotle’s hierarchy, Euripides’ Cresphontes and Iphigenia among the Taurians, in which “nothing bad” happens from our point of view. Yet, the two chapters, I will show, fit together as pieces of the same puzzle. The key has been hidden in references to tragedies or tragic myths in the Nicomachean Ethics (book 3 and 5) and in the Eudemian Ethics (book 2), where Aristotle analyzes degrees of voluntariness and involuntariness of actions. Illuminating Aristotle’s philosophy of plot further explains his astonishing concept of the tragic, which appears to be strikingly different from ours: it is not necessarily based on the representations of suffering and death, but on the possibility of acting involuntarily to harm our nearest and dearest.
Dana Munteanu investiga las confluencias entre filosofía y literatura en el campo de los clásicos y más allá. En su primer libro, Tragic Pathos, y en varios artículos anteriores, ha examinado la naturaleza misteriosa de las respuestas emocionales a las tragedias, tal como las describen los antiguos filósofos griegos (Gorgias, Platón, Aristóteles) y expresadas en las propias obras (Esquilo, Sófocles y Eurípides). Actualmente se encuentra desarrollando varios proyectos: un examen de la muerte falsa en las tragedias, un libro sobre filósofos antiguos en el escenario y un proyecto colaborativo sobre la Poética de Aristóteles a la luz de los intereses más amplios del filósofo (biología, teoría política y ética).
